They are usually recommended to people who suffer from venous insufficiency. Venous insufficiency occurs when the valves inside the veins do not work properly, and blood returns to the heart with difficulty, accumulating in the lower limbs due to the action of gravity.

Compression socks, to remedy this, exert a controlled, decreasing pressure from the ankle towards the upper leg. This pushes the blood upwards and helps prevent edema or swelling and, where possible, venous thrombosis. 

Compression socks also have contraindications:  people with acute ulcers, dermatitis, extensive eczema, severe arteriopathies, ischemia, or thrombosis should not wear them.

Most searches for compression stockings focus on models for treatment and prevention. But it is important to remember that there are different models, such as sports socks, for example, they help athletes a lot with post-workout muscle recovery.

But if your sock is medicinal, you need to keep in mind that they fall into two main groups: 

  • Preventive socks
  • Treatment socks

Preventive compression stockings

Prevention socks have the softest compression, between 10 and 20 mmHg. They are recommended to people who work a lot while time standing or sitting, make long trips, and also to those who already feel some symptoms of circulation problems in their legs and want to reduce discomfort.

The purpose of preventive compression stockings is to prevent the appearance of varicose veins, thrombosis, and reduce fatigue in the legs of people who need to stay in the same position for a long time. In addition, mild varicose diseases can also be treated with mild compression. 

Compression stockings for treatment

Compression stockings for treatment, on the other hand, are those with more than 20 mmHg of pressure: medium (20-30 mmHg), high (30-40 mmHg), and very high (above 40 mmHg). Doctors recommend them according to the symptoms and conditions of the skin and veins.

Medium compression stockings are usually recommended for:

  • edema without changes in the skin
  • edema with hyperpigmentation changes
  • thrombophlebitis
  • post-sclerotherapy

High compression stockings are for:

  • edema with hyperpigmentation changes
  • post-deep vein thrombosis
  • post-surgical

The problem with these socks is that they are difficult to put on, especially those with strong compression, especially if we take into account that most of the patients who need them are older people with reduced mobility.

Socks should always be put on in the morning, right after waking up and taken off at night. You can apply talcum powder on the skin as it allows the socks to slide better. Another trick is to use rubber gloves. Now let’s move towards the technique:

  • First, flip the socks.
  • With the socks inside out, push the toe in a little with your thumbs and tuck in.
  • Now start sliding the sock over itself, covering the foot towards the heel, and adjust it. This is the hardest part.
  • Once the heel is in place, continue to move the sock up, and stretch it well on all sides to eliminate wrinkles.  

You will notice how your circulation improves just after one day of use. At night, please take off your socks and wash them.

 The ideal time to take the measurement is in the morning when you get up or, at least, after having spent about 20 minutes with your legs elevated, so that the ankles are not swollen.

There are at least three different degrees of compression when it comes to compression socks. 

SOFT (15-20mmHg): This degree of compression is the lightest of all, suitable for day-to-day use, long trips, or post-workout recoveries. Soft compression stockings facilitate blood circulation without tightening your legs too much and are the only ones that can be purchased without a prescription. 

MEDIUM (20-30mmHg): This degree of compression is ideal for varicose veins, lymphedema (swelling), and also for post-surgical recovery of varicose veins. This degree of compression compresses the legs more, so it requires a medical prescription to be used.

HIGH (30-40mmHg): This type of compression is indicated for severe cases of varicose veins, Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT), lymphedema, swollen legs, varicose (severe) veins, and post-surgical use.

TIP 2 – VERSION / TYPE

After finding the right degree of compression, the next step is to choose the TYPE of compression socks. You will have three options to choose from, namely:

Sock 3/4 or Half Calf:  This type of sock only wears the area from the feet to the calf, being suitable when the region to be treated from the knee down.

7/8 sock or thigh sock: This type of sock covers the entire leg, reaching almost to the groin, being suitable for patients who need to take care of the legs entirely.

Maternity Pantyhose and Stockings (Pregnant Women): These two types of socks are those that wear to the waist and, in the case of “maternal” socks, they have an ideal adaptation to accommodate the belly of pregnant women without causing discomfort. It is worth remembering that, regardless of whether socks are larger than 7/8, the compression efficiency of these models is from the thigh down, not reaching the waist area.

  • Washing should be done by hand, with warm water (at most 40ºC) and soap for delicate garments. Rinse well so that no soap remains.
  • Drain without twisting, for example, with the help of a towel.
  • Let it dry in the air and away from a source of heat. The socks will regain its compression.
  • The best thing is to have two pairs and go exchanging them.
